poem #16

"family trees"

family trees as they are
most often seen
are full of barky crags
knots and gnarly branches,
some willow-like or artful bonsai.
excusing all bad metaphor-making,
it should be understood that
families are more akin to coral,
the kind of reef made
for and by
expanding in all directions

infinitely

just under the turquois water
on a crumpled postcard.
