This Is Just To Say

(A Poem After a Manner of William Carlos Williams)

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the last cookie
that remained
in the plastic box

and which
I had promised
you could eat

Forgive me
it was delicious
so moist
and the frosting
was so thick

We share the experience of eating the cookie:

(1) as justification.

(2) as a mitigating circumstance.

(3) as a way for the victim to know how much we have wronged her, so that her forgiveness, if it were forthcoming, would be fully informed and worth something to us.

(4) as a vicarious experience -- a consolation and a consolation prize -- for those we've robbed.

(5) by way of confusing the victim with the confessor. Easy in a marriage.

(6) as further provocation.

(7) due to a death wish.

on my table, i have a cookie sitting in a plastic box. chocolate and white chocolate, and not too sweet. it would taste great dunked in coffee. my parents bought it for my brother. i already ate mine, but his has been taunting me all day, wearing me down. i gave in, and my wife stopped me as i picked it up.
